Over the winter of 2006, Project RED Death will be prepared for its new engine. There are many engines that Jay could build, however he has settled in on a 4.125” bore, 3.400” stroke 8.200 deck engine. The goal of the finished project is a daily-driven, pump gas engine that will function with mufflers. In RED Death and all of the chassis modifications that Jay has planned, the end goal is a 9-second time slip completely naturally aspirated. Jay feels that 700 horsepower is a lofty goal but the engine will be dynoed at Bill Glidden’s so proof will be had. “Billy’s dyno is notoriously conservative, but hey we all have goals” Jay states. Oh ya, the 9-second time slip will be achieved on a drag radial tire. Going 9’s with a 363 CID engine, pump gas, mufflers, drag radials, and daily driven? Stay tuned……. Block Jay will be using a block courtesy of Greg Wold at Dart. It is a 8.200” deck block that currently is a standard bore 4.000”. The block has been sonic checked and this particular block would be safe at 4.210” bore. Jay has elected to stop at 4.125” because he feels that most guys can identify with the 4.125” bore. Crankshaft An Eagle crankshaft has already been purchased. It was bought on Ebay for $225.00. In its current form the crank weighs 52#. Jay is hoping with the modifications he has planned that the actual balanced weight will be around 40# to 42#. Rods Eagle 5.400” rods were also purchased on Ebay. They are the “H-beam” design with cap screws. For $175.00, Jay could not pass them up. Pistons Jay is still looking at his piston choices. No company has been selected as of yet. The piston will be a full dish to keep the compression ratio pump gas-friendly. Jay is hoping for 10.75:1 to 11.00:1. Cylinder Heads The small block Ford market has some very serious cylinder heads now. Jay wants to build this engine with a conventional cylinder head that most guys can identify with. Jay has selected Canfield Cylinder Heads as his primary supplier due to the relationship with John Fenton. Jay will use either the 20475-54-1 cylinder head fully ported or possibly the new Canfield 18-degree 230cc head that John has recently released. The piston choice will determine which head that Jay uses. As of August 2006, these are all of the choices that Jay has made. Check back periodically to see how this incredible project unfolds. |
