Project RED Death will be an ongoing endeavor. RED Death is a 1989 Mustang Sedan. The car was purchased in June of 2005 with a stock 1993 Cobra engine and 100% stock suspension. The previous owner had installed a Crower 15512 camshaft, 70mm TB and a 76mm C&L mass air meter.

The previous owner had run a best of 12.68 at 107 mph. Jay fixed several items that were over looked by the original owner. The car ran 12.32 at 110 mph the first time out with Jay behind the wheel.

Jay felt as though the engine and clutch were not on the same page. Without the aid if an adjustable clutch, Jay decided to bring the engine to the clutch. He designed a camshaft that would make more torque while foregoing some top end horsepower. The result was an impressive 12.03 at 113.32 mph.

RED Death received a Holley Systemax lower intake manifold and a Hurricane upper manifold. Jay knew that with the very restrictive GT-40 heads in place that intake flow was needed, thus the very short runner intake was used. [With a 1” spacer in place, the intake manifold has 9.7” of runner length and hurts intake flow only 2.7%]. This series of modifications resulted in an impressive 11.83 at 115 mph. Jay knew that the stock rev limit of 6250 RPM and the 3.73 gear were now the limitations.

The next modification to RED Death was a 4.56 gear and a Ford Motorsport Extender with which Jay has vast experience. Jay also knew that the stock pedestal rockers were going to be an issue. The GT-40 heads were removed and were machined .250” for the screw in studs. While the heads were being machined, a simple valve job was performed. The heads were assembled with Ferrea valves and Jay’s choice of valve springs.

Jay took RED Death to test these modifications in September of 2005. It ran a best of 11.53 at 117.1. This was at 3190 lbs on the scales at the track, through the 2.5” exhaust which is dumped at the axle. The car was driven to Stanton, Michigan which is 2.5 hours away and it was driven back, all the while getting over 19 mpg. Remember, this is with 4.56 gears!

Jay has continuously made improvements to RED Death. Now the car has a camshaft that will allow over 7000 RPM to be utilized. The stock shortblock has been gone through insuring the proper clearances. A 90mm throttle body from Acufab has been installed and Jay simply cannot believe the throttle response that RED Death has. The car will very soon go to Jay’s good friend Dave Zimmerman owner of TEAM-Z Motorsports for a full TEAM-Z rear suspension. Jay is anticipating a very low 11-second time slip and is optimistic about achieving 10’s with unported GT-40 iron heads and a stock shortblock.

Stay tuned this fall for the results!
